Cellar victim Kampusch raped, starved in film of ordeal

VIENNA (Reuters) – A new film based on the story of Austrian kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch shows her being repeatedly raped by the captor who beat and starved her during the eight-and-a-half years that he kept her in a cellar beneath his house.

Kampusch was snatched on her way to school at the age of 10 by Wolfgang Priklopil and held in a windowless cell under his garage near Vienna until she escaped in 2006, causing a sensation in Austria and abroad. Priklopil committed suicide.

Kampusch had always refused to respond to claims that she had had sex with Priklopil, but in a German television interview on her 25th birthday last week said she had decided to reveal the truth because it had leaked out from police files.

The film, “3,096 Days” – based on Kampusch’s autobiography of the same name – soberly portrays her captivity in a windowless cellar less than 6 square metres (65 square feet) in area, often deprived of food for days at a time.

The emaciated Kampusch – who weighed just 38 kg (84 pounds) at one point in 2004 – keeps a diary written on toilet paper concealed in a box.

One entry reads: “At least 60 blows in the face. Ten to 15 nausea-inducing fist blows to the head. One strike with the fist with full weight to my right ear.”

The movie shows occasional moments that approach tenderness, such as when Priklopil presents her with a cake for her 18th birthday or buys her a dress as a gift – but then immediately goes on to chide her for not knowing how to waltz with him.

GREY AREAS

Antonia Campbell-Hughes, who plays the teenaged Kampusch, said she had tried to portray “the strength of someone’s soul, the ability of people to survive… but also the grey areas within a relationship that people don’t necessarily understand.”

The British actress said she had not met Kampusch during the making of the film or since. “It was a very isolated time, it was a bubble of time, and I wanted to keep that very focused,” she told journalists as she arrived for the Vienna premiere.

Kampusch herself attended the premiere, looking composed as she posed for pictures but declining to give interviews.

In an interview with Germany’s Bild Zeitung last week, she said: “Yes, I did recognize myself, although the reality was even worse. But one can’t really show that in the cinema, since it wasn’t supposed to be a horror film.”

The movie, made at the Constantin Film studios in Bavaria, Germany, also stars Amy Pidgeon as the 10-year-old Kampusch and Danish actor Thure Lindhardt as Priklopil.

“I focused mainly on playing the human being because… we have to remember it was a human being. Monsters do not exist, they’re only in cartoons,” Lindhart said.

“It became clear to me that it’s a story about survival, and it’s a story about surviving eight years of hell. If that story can be told then I can also play the bad guy.”

The director was German-American Sherry Hormann, who made her English-language debut with the 2009 move “Desert Flower”, an adaptation of the autobiography of Somali-born model and anti-female circumcision activist Waris Dirie.

“I’m a mother and I wonder at the strength of this child, and it was important for me to tell this story from a different perspective, to tell how this child using her own strength could survive this atrocious martyrdom,” Hormann said.

The Kampusch case was followed two years later by that of Josef Fritzl, an Austrian who held his daughter captive in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children with her.

The crimes prompted soul-searching about the Austrian psyche, and questions as to how the authorities and neighbors could have let such crimes go undetected for so long.

The film goes on general release on Thursday.

Nine Inch Nails to go back on road after reinventing itself

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails is planning to hit the road again for a world tour after reinventing itself and adding new musicians.

Founder Trent Reznor, who took a hiatus after the band’s “Wave Goodbye” tour in 2009, told music website Pitchfork.com on Monday that the band is “reinventing itself from scratch.”

Reznor said in a statement that bass player Eric Avery, formerly of Jane’s Addiction, King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew and Josh Eustis of electronic act Telefon Tel Aviv would join him in the revamped venture, along with previous collaborators Alessandro Cortini and drummer Ilan Rubin.

“I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show,” Reznor told Pitchfork.

He said the first shows will begin this summer, followed by a tour in the United States and worldwide dates in 2014. Details and dates were not announced.

Nine Inch Nails has featured a revolving lineup since it was formed in Cleveland, Ohio by Reznor in 1988. The band won Grammys for songs “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery” in the 1990s.

It released its last album “The Slip” in 2008 and Reznor said in 2009 that the band was taking a break from touring.

Hathaway, Waltz, “Amour” win as Oscars share out the honors

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Anne Hathaway won her first Oscar on Sunday and harrowing Austrian film “Amour” was voted Best Foreign Language Film as the movie industry scattered its highest honors across multiple films.

Hathaway, who starved herself and chopped off her long brown locks to play tragic heroine Fantine in “Les Miserables,” was considered the overwhelming favorite for supporting role in the screen version of the popular stage musical.

“It came true,” she said, looking at the golden statuette.

“Here’s hoping that some day in the not too distant future the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories and not in real life,” Hathaway added.

All the main members of the “Les Miserables” cast sang a rousing version of “Suddenly” from the film in a telecast that was packed with musical numbers, including a show-stopping performance by ‘Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.

“Amour,” the heart-wrenching tale of an elderly couple coping with the wife’s debilitating stroke, gave Austria the Best Foreign Language film after it had dominated awards shows in Europe and the United States for months.

“Amour” actress Emmanuelle Riva, 86, has emerged as a dark horse in the past few days in the Best Actress race that had been seen as a battle between “Zero Dark Thirty” actress Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence of “Silver Linings Playbook.”

An Oscar for Riva later on Sunday’s ceremony, would make her the oldest person ever to win an Academy Award for acting.

Presidential drama “Lincoln” went into Sunday’s three-hour plus ceremony with a leading 12 nominations, including a directing nod for double Oscar winner Steven Spielberg.

But mid-way through the show no film was in a dominant position, leaving few clues as to who might win the big four awards – Actor, Actress, Director, and Best Picture – towards the close of the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

TARANTINO BRINGS SECOND OSCAR FOR CHRISTOPH WALTZ

Another Austrian, Christoph Waltz, was the surprise winner of the closest contest going into the ceremony. He took Best Supporting Actor honors for his turn as an eccentric dentist-turned-bounty-hunter in Quentin Tarantino‘s slavery revenge fantasy “Django Unchained.”

It was Waltz’s second Oscar, after winning one for the Tarantino movie “Inglourious Basterds” in 2010.

Seth MacFarlane, making his debut as Oscars host, turned the telecast into a running joke about whether he would be deemed the worst Oscar host ever by the media on Monday.

“I honestly cannot believe I am here. It’s an honor that everyone else said ‘no,’” said the creator of provocative edgy animated TV series “Family Guy.”

MacFarlane mixed big music and dance numbers with edgy sketches, and barbs about Hollywood A-listers.

His biggest laugh came in a reference to director Ben Affleck’s snub in the directing race for his Iran hostage thriller “Argo” about a CIA mission 30 years ago.

“The story was so top secret that the film’s director was unknown to the Academy!,” MacFarlane quipped.

“Lincoln”s front-runner Best Picture status has been dented by the six-week victory streak enjoyed at other Hollywood awards by “Argo,” and the thriller is now thought to have the edge.

If “Argo” does prevail, it will be the first movie to win Best Picture without its director even getting a nomination since “Driving Miss Daisy” in 1990.

Musical “Les Miserables,” comedy “Silver Linings Playbook,” shipwreck tale “Life of Pi,” Osama bin laden thriller “Zero Dark Thirty,” slavery Western “Django Unchained,” indie film “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “Amour” round out the contenders for the best film of 2012.

“Brave,” the Pixar movie about a feisty Scottish princess, took home the golden statuette for Best Animated Feature.

After several years of nominating little-seen movies, this year’s nine Best Picture contenders have pulled in more than $ 2 billion in tickets worldwide.

The Oscar winners were chosen in secret ballots by some 5,800 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Oscar show promises music, megastars and James Bond

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Bigger stars, more music and edgier comedy are on the menu for Sunday’s Oscar ceremony, when the most coveted awards in the movie industry are handed out during a glittering Academy Awards show.

Producers of the three-hour Oscar telecast at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre are promising a faster-paced show and more face time with first-time host Seth MacFarlane, while honoring the best films not just of 2012 but also of decades past.

“We have more performances on that stage than we can ever remember there being in the past. And we are not trotting people out just to sing and dance. Every single thing you see on that stage will be related to movies,” said Craig Zadan, who is producing the Oscar telecast for the first time with Neil Meron.

“We have devised ways that we are hoping will make the pacing faster … That doesn’t mean we are not going to give as much weight to honoring the winners, but there has been a lot of dead space in the show (in the past),” Zadan told Reuters.

Steven Spielberg’s presidential movie “Lincoln” heads into Sunday’s ceremony with a leading 12 nominations, followed by Ang Lee’s shipwreck tale “Life of Pi” with 11, French Revolutionary musical “Les Miserables” and romantic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” with eight apiece, and Iran hostage drama “Argo” with seven.

All five are competing for Best Picture, the top prize, in a tight race that has narrowed in recent weeks to “Lincoln” or “Argo” and will be the last to be announced on Sunday night.

JAMES BOND AND MUSICALS

Before then, Zadan and Meron have assembled an array of performers and presenters that almost outshine the actors, actresses, directors and screenwriters who have been waiting since early January to see if they will go home with a golden Oscar.

They include A-listers Barbra Streisand, Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda, John Travolta and Jennifer Aniston, along with younger stars Daniel Radcliffe, Kristen Stewart and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

But don’t count on seeing all six surviving James Bond actors on stage for the planned special 50th anniversary tribute to the British secret agent’s illustrious movie career.

“We have a tribute to James Bond which is really exciting and thrilling, but it never included the concept of six guys coming out and standing there awkwardly on the stage,” Zadan said, quashing speculation that Daniel Craig, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Sean Connery and George Lazenby would unite on Sunday.

The nominations for “Les Miserables,” where Anne Hathaway is tipped to win Best Supporting Actress, has opened the door to a celebration of the last decade of musicals.

The tribute will feature Hathaway, her Oscar-nominated co-star Hugh Jackman, as well as “Dreamgirls” and “Chicago” Oscar winners Jennifer Hudson and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

MacFarlane, the creator of provocative animated TV series “Family Guy,” will also be showing off his vocal skills, and spending more time on stage than has been traditional for Oscar hosts.

“What happens a lot in the past is that the host comes on, talks for a lot, and then disappears for half an hour. We are not doing that. We are having Seth be there a lot, out there introducing things, and that allows for more pacing and comedy,” said Zadan.

But there will be plenty of room for the unpredictable – and that’s not even counting possible upsets when the winners’ envelopes are unsealed.

“We love the fact that people don’t quite know what they’re going to get with Seth as a host,” said Meron. “We live for the moments that happen on stage. Those are some of the great Oscar moments of the past.”

The Oscar winners are chosen by some 5,800 movie industry professionals who are members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Academy Awards ceremony, in its 85th year, will be broadcast live on ABC television in the United States, and to more than 225 other nations.

Jane Fonda, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Garner join list of Oscar presenters

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Oscar-winner Jane Fonda has been added to this year’s list of presenters at the Academy Awards ceremony, along with non-Oscar winners Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Garner and Kerry Washington, the show’s producers said on Thursday.

Fonda took home her first Oscar statue in 1972 for her leading role in “Klute” and then won another in 1979 for her performance in Hal Ashby’s “Coming Home.”

She has been nominated five other times, while Stewart, Garner and Washington have yet to be so honored.

Still, Stewart is a hugely popular young starlet thanks to her role as Bella Swan in the “Twilight” franchise, and Washington portrayed Jamie Foxx‘s wife in Best Picture nominee “Django Unchained.”

And not only did TV’s “Alias” star Garner appear in the 2012 family fantasy “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” but her husband, Ben Affleck, while not getting a nomination this year, did direct the clear frontrunner for Best Picture, “Argo.”

All four leading ladies are joining a very long list of previously announced Oscar presenters, including Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Douglas, Jamie Foxx, Paul Rudd, Salma Hayek Pinault, Melissa McCarthy, Liam Neeson, John Travolta, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Wahlberg, Ted and the cast of “The Avengers.”

Jean Dujardin, Christopher Plummer, Octavia Spencer and Meryl Streep – last year’s winners in the Academy’s acting categories – are returning as presenters, too.

Barbra Streisand and Adele will perform, along with the casts of “Les Misérables,” “Chicago” and “Dreamgirls.”

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane hosts this Sunday’s telecast.

Mumford & Sons storm to top of Billboard 200 after Grammy win

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – British folk band Mumford & Sons jumped to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday after their album “Babel” won a top Grammy honor, while several other Grammy performers received boosts on the U.S. charts.

“Babel,” which won the coveted Album of the Year prize at the Grammy awards on February 10, sold 185,000 copies according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. The band also performed twice on the live television broadcast, which was watched by 28 million people.

The album was released in September 2012 and shot to the top of the Billboard 200 chart as one of the biggest-selling debuts of the year. It was ranked No. 4 last week before again claiming the top spot after its Grammy boost.

The official “2013 Grammy Nominees” compilation album, featuring songs by The Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Gotye, landed at No. 2 this week, with 87,000 copies sold.

Grammy performers also saw their albums return to the top 10, with Bruno Mars‘ “Unorthodox Jukebox” at No. 3, Taylor Swift’s “Red” at No. 4, The Lumineers’ self-titled debut record at No. 6, FUN.’s “Some Nights” at No. 7 and Maroon 5′s “Overexposed” at No. 10.

The digital songs chart also saw an impact from Grammy performances but none of the artists were able to oust indie rapper Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” from the top spot, which sold more than 412,000 downloads.

Rihanna’s “Stay” featuring Mikky Ekko received the biggest post-Grammy boost with more than 306,000 copies downloaded, coming in at No. 2.

Viral music video phenomenon “Harlem Shake” by Baauer came in at No. 3, followed by Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” at No. 4 and Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z at No. 5, following the pair’s Grammy performance.

History alive and kicking at 2013 Oscars

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – History is alive and kicking at this year’s Oscars in an unusually rich year for movies that plumb the distant and recent American past and have resonated with both audiences and voters.

Four of the nine Best Picture nominees at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony – Iran hostage drama “Argo,” Osama bin Laden thriller “Zero Dark Thirty,” slavery revenge fantasy “Django Unchained” and U.S. presidential drama “Lincoln” – are the most discussed films of the awards season, with their very different takes on historical events.

“It’s an interesting year for thought-provoking movies that have a semblance of reality. Some look to where we come from and where we are going, and they get people thinking,” said Pete Hammond, awards columnist for entertainment industry website Deadline.com.

It’s a sharp contrast with 2012 when the silent film comedy “The Artist” was embraced by the 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a love letter to old Hollywood.

This time, terrorism, slavery, war, politics and the CIA take center stage in films that try to make sense of calamitous times for the United States and draw lessons for the future.

POLITICAL DEADLOCK

“Lincoln,” Steven Spielberg’s account of President Abraham Lincoln‘s drive to persuade a divided Congress to abolish slavery in 1865, has spoken loudly to present day Americans faced with daily evidence of political deadlock in Washington.

“The movie emphasizes the theme of how difficult it is to get anything done in a democratic republic like ours, and how it requires wheeling and dealing and negotiating,” said Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.

“The idea of taking these very modern problems and seeing them positioned in this noble historical past has been one that, in an odd way, is very comforting,” Thompson added.

Not so comforting is “Django Unchained,” director Quentin Tarantino’s blood-soaked but audacious take on 19th century slavery, filmed in darkly humorous spaghetti Western style.

Spike Lee, one of the nation’s most respected black filmmakers, called “Django” disrespectful to his ancestors and vowed not to see it.

“American slavery was not a Sergio Leone spaghetti Western. It was a holocaust,” Lee said in a Twitter message in December.

Although the film has divided the African-American community, it has taken an impressive $ 154 million at the North American box office alone, received five Oscar nods, and sparked new debates about the brutal era of slavery.

No movie has split Americans more this season than “Zero Dark Thirty,” which was released less than two years after the May 2011 killing of al Qaeda leader bin Laden by U.S. Navy SEALS.

Attacked by politicians and some activist groups for its portrayal of torture in the decade-long hunt for bin Laden, the film is being promoted in Oscar campaigns as “the most talked-about movie of the year.”

CHALLENGES NOT ANSWERS

“Zero Dark Thirty” screenwriter Mark Boal said the film is intended to challenge Americans to ask questions. “It’s a story about our time, and our nation, and our role in the world,” Boal said in a speech at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles this month. “It contributes to public dialogue about our government and its actions.”

It’s also a film that, for better or worse, may stand for years as the definitive version of the bin Laden mission.

“We watched all the news coverage of the killing of Osama bin Laden. But we did not have those front row seats and a movie is much more memorable than the president of the United States standing by the podium and describing it,” said Thompson

“Until another Osama bin Laden movie is made, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ is probably going to be one of the dominant ways in which that event is remembered.”

“Argo” director Ben Affleck sees his movie as “eerily current,” despite being set more than 30 years ago. Based on a real CIA mission soon after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it recounts the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from the Canadian embassy in Tehran using an unlikely Hollywood movie cover story.

Noting the unrelenting political tensions between the United States and Iran, Affleck told reporters in January: “I think we are feeling a bit frustrated as a country, and this was a time when the CIA and the Canadians went out and got something right.”

All four films have been accused of taking liberties with historical accuracy. But pop culture expert Thompson said movies shouldn’t be judged like journalism or history books.

“The great thing about art is that it turns data into a valuable experience. We want art to be working on this material,” he said.

Dave Karger, chief correspondent for Fandango.com, said the Academy has always gravitated toward stories drawn from real life.

“I don’t think it’s a conscious choice, but I do think there is something appealing to most Academy voters in these quintessential American stories,” Karger told Reuters.

The Oscar Best Picture nominees are rounded out by musical “Les Miserables,” shipwreck tale “Life of Pi,” French-language drama “Amour,” mythological indie film “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and quirky comedy “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Country singer Mindy McCready dead in apparent suicide

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) – Country music star Mindy McCready, whose albums include “Ten Thousand Angels” and “If I Don’t Stay the Night,” was found dead on Sunday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, an Arkansas sheriff said. She was 37.

McCready’s body was found on the porch of a house in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on Sunday afternoon. She was pronounced dead at the scene “from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Deputies had been dispatched to the area following reports of “shots fired,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that McCready’s family had been notified.

Florida-born McCready moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to break into the country music business at the age of 18, according to allmusic.com.

She achieved early success with her 1996 debut album, “Ten Thousands Angels,” which sold a reported 2 million copies. Four other studio albums followed.

While successful in her career, McCready’s personal life had began to unravel in recent years.

In 2004 she was convicted of prescription drug fraud and placed on parole. Three years later she spent time in jail for violating her parole terms.

The sheriff’s office said McCready’s body would be taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy, adding that “the matter will be fully investigated.”

Jennifer Lawrence seen winning Best Actress Oscar

(Reuters) – Two rising Hollywood actresses are seen as front-runners for this year’s Best Actress Oscar, with Jennifer Lawrence expected to steal the show from Jessica Chastain on awards night, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday.

In true Hollywood style, there is even some off-screen drama between the actresses before the February 24 Academy Awards with Chastain from “Zero Dark Thirty” using Facebook to deny unsubstantiated rumors of fierce rivalry with Lawrence from “Silver Linings Playbook.”

“I find it very sad that the media makes up bogus stories about women fighting in this industry,” wrote Chastain over the weekend.

The two actresses are in a field of five vying for the top female title at the world’s most prestigious movie awards.

The group also includes the youngest and oldest nominees in the award’s 85-year history, with 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis nominated for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Emmanuelle Riva, 85, up for foreign language drama “Amour.”

The fifth actress in the running is Naomi Watts as the mother in the tsunami movie “The Impossible.”

Riva has won two best actress awards this year – from the BAFTA and the National Society of Film Critics – for playing a retired music teacher struggling to cope with the aftermath of a stroke in Austrian director Michael Haneke’s film.

But a Reuters Ipsos poll of 1,586 Americans found 15 percent thought Lawrence, 22, should win the Oscar and 15 percent said she was most likely to win the prize.

Only 11 percent thought Chastain, 35, should win and 10 percent said she was most likely to win. Riva was only seen as most likely to win by 4 percent of voters.

Chastain and Lawrence have been competing head-to-head so far in the major acting awards this year.

Chastain lost out to Lawrence in the Screen Actors Guild awards last month when “The Hunger Games” star won the Best Actress prize for her role as a young widow in the quirky romance “Silver Linings Playbook.”

But Chastain took home the Golden Globe for her role as a young female CIA agent who tracks down Osama bin Laden in thriller “Zero Dark Thirty.”

Both actresses have been nominated for Oscars previously.

Chastain was in the running for Best Supporting Actress last year for her role in “The Help” while Lawrence was nominated for Best Actress in 2010 for the indie hit “Winter’s Bone.”

The public was more certain on who would bag the award for Best Supporting Actress from the 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Anne Hathaway has already won three trophies this year for playing Fantine in the musical “Les Miserables.”

The Reuters poll, conducted between February 8 and Tuesday, found 26 percent of voters said Hathaway was most likely to take home the Best Supporting Actress statuette, while 18 percent expected Sally Field to win for her role in the U.S. Civil War-era drama “Lincoln.”

Also nominated for their supporting turns are Amy Adams from “The Master,” Helen Hunt from “The Sessions” and Jacki Weaver from “Silver Linings Playbook.”

The accuracy of the Reuters poll uses a statistical measure called a “credibility interval” and is precise to within 2.8 percentage points.

Emmett Till’s family reacts to Lil Wayne lyric

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A cousin of the late Emmett Till wonders if Lil Wayne understands just how damaging it was when he rapped a vulgar reference to the black U.S. teen whose death in 1955 became a significant moment in the civil rights movement.

Airickca Gordon-Taylor says Till’s family would like an apology from Lil Wayne for the brief but disturbing lyric on Future’s “Karate Chop” remix. But more than that, she’d like the platinum-selling New Orleans rapper to understand how his comparison of a sex act to the 14-year-old Chicago native’s torture death in Mississippi is hurtful to the black community.

“It was a heinous murder,” Gordon-Taylor said in a phone interview Thursday from Chicago. “He was brutally beaten and tortured, and he was shot, wrapped in barbed wire and tossed in the Tallahatchie River. The images that we’re fortunate to have (of his open casket) that ‘Jet’ published, they demonstrate the ugliness of racism. So to compare a woman’s anatomy — the gateway of life — to the ugly face of death, it just destroyed me. And then I had to call the elders in my family and explain to them before they heard it from some another source.”

The Future remix with Weezy guesting was leaked on the internet over the weekend. Epic Records said Wednesday it regretted the unauthorized remix version and that it was employing “great efforts” to pull it down. The brief reference — just seven words — will be stricken from the song when it’s officially released later.

The rapper made a crude reference to rough sex and used an obscenity. He indicated he wanted to do as much damage as had been done to Till.

Gordon-Taylor says Epic Chairman and CEO LA Reid personally reached out to her on a conference call Wednesday evening that included the Rev. Jesse Jackson to explain and apologize. Jackson said in a phone interview Thursday that Reid said on the call that Future and Lil Wayne were cooperative.

“Once he got the point he realized this was beyond the zone and he immediately pulled it,” Jackson said. “And he talked with both artists, who agreed.”

Weezy has made no comment, nor has he addressed the issue on his Twitter account. Gordon-Taylor says there’s been no attempt to apologize so far.

Till was in Mississippi visiting family when he was killed for allegedly flirting with a white woman. He was beaten, had his eyes gouged out and was shot in the head before his assailants tied a cotton gin fan to his body with barbed wire and tossed his body into the Tallahatchie River. Two white men, including the woman’s husband, were acquitted of the killing by an all-white jury.

Till’s body was recovered and returned to Chicago where his mother, Mamie Till, insisted on having an open casket at his funeral. The pictures of his battered body helped push civil rights into the cultural conversation in the U.S. Bob Dylan even wrote a song about it: “The Death of Emmett Till.”

Gordon-Taylor, founding director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, said Lil Wayne’s lyric was devastating to her family. Simeon Wright, Till’s cousin who shared a bed with his relative the night he was taken by the killers, heard the lyric for the first time Wednesday night.

“And he said the Ku Klux Klan would be very proud of Lil Wayne,” Gordon-Taylor said. “And as tough a man as he is, I could see the hurt and the anger in his eyes. It just demonstrates to our family just how lost are our youth.”

Both Gordon-Taylor and Jackson believe the 30-year-old rapper could help with that problem if he chose. Jackson has met Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, before and said, “I respect his art.”

Jackson says the issue of a negative portrayal of the black community comes up from time to time, citing The Rolling Stones’ “Some Girls,” for instance: “We just felt they could make their point without grossly insulting people.”

Music also has the power to uplift, he noted. Harry Belafonte opened eyes to conditions in Africa and the Caribbean, for instance. Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” helped Americans see the war in Vietnam in a new light. And Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” helped clear the way for a national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“We want artists who have considerable power to use their power to uplift and redirect,” Jackson said. “It’s not a matter of free speech, it’s also speech that matters. … These artists have culturally transforming power. Either they hurt or they help.”

One year later, Grammys recall scramble over Whitney Houston death

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Grammy host LL Cool J called it a “death in our family” and it was he who suggested starting the Grammy Awards show last year with a prayer for Whitney Houston.

Behind the scenes, Grammy Awards producers had worked all night to re-shape the music industry‘s biggest night just 24 hours after the drowning death of the troubled superstar in a Beverly Hills hotel.

Producers and musicians tell the tale in a one-hour TV special “The Grammys Will Go On: A Death in the Family” to be broadcast on CBS on Saturday on the eve of this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

The singer, known both for her soaring ballads and well-chronicled history of drug abuse, is also expected to be remembered at the annual pre-Grammy party hosted in Beverly Hills on Saturday by her mentor, record producer Clive Davis.

Earlier this week, Madame Tussauds museum unveiled four different wax figures of Houston at various stages of her 35-year career that will go on display at its attractions in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Houston, 48, was found face down in a bathtub on February 11 2012, in what authorities later called an accidental drowning due to cocaine use and heart disease.

“My heart started racing. I started hyper-ventilating,” recalls Grammy Awards show director Louis J. Horvitz in the TV special, as news reached Grammy rehearsals last year of Houston‘s death.

Producers realized immediately that despite months in the planning, the live TV ceremony the next day would have to reflect Houston‘s passing.

TEARS AND TOUGH TIMES

Scripts were re-written, clips of Houston‘s many previous Grammy performances were added, and the call went out to Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson to come in and perform Houston‘s signature song “I Will Always Love You.”

“Moments later (after hearing news of Houston‘s death) I got the call to sing in her memory. I would do anything for Whitney,” Hudson recalls in the TV special.

Rehearsal footage shows an emotional Hudson breaking into tears while practicing the song. “By the time she got to the end, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” said Horvitz of her rehearsal.

“We are used to tough situations,” said veteran Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich, recalling how Aretha Franklin was called on to replace a sick Luciano Pavarotti in 1998 while the live Grammy show was on the air.

But the death of Houston, a six-time Grammy winner with some 200 million records sold, was something different.

It was rapper and Grammy host LL Cool J who suggested opening the awards telecast with a prayer for Houston. But he said his legs were shaking backstage with the pressure of balancing sorrow over her death with respect for all the other artists due to perform, and win awards that night.

“I was in this weird no-man’s land between mourning and celebration,” the rapper said.

The TV special also shows artists like Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Bruno Mars struggling to continue rehearsals, old footage of Houston in her prime, and clips of Davis telling guests at his annual music industry party that the singer had been found dead hours earlier in a hotel room in the same building.

TV drama captures public angst at “Made in Japan” decline

TOKYO (Reuters) – A Japanese electronics firm near bankruptcy, a ruthless Chinese rival and a laid-off engineer feature in a popular TV drama that is hitting a public nerve in a nation fretting over the decline of a once-admired manufacturing model.

A weaker yen due to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe‘s expansionary economic policies has lightened some of the gloom for exporters, but NHK public TV’s “Made in Japan” serial reflects a deep angst about an ailing manufacturing sector that was once key to Japan’s success and a source of national pride.

The 3-part drama, which ends on Saturday, covers a secret “restructuring” team’s race against a 3-month deadline to come up with a survival plan for “Takumi Electric” – the name means “artisan” in Japanese – before the bank pulls the plug.

Standing in their way are a Japanese engineer who goes to work in China after being laid off when his lithium-ion battery project was frozen – possibly taking proprietary technology with him – a clueless corporate president given his job by his founder father and a reporter desperate for a scoop.

All of which resonates for many Japanese as they watch once iconic electronics firms – Sony, Panasonic and Sharp come to mind – lose global share to South Korean and Chinese rivals, and wonder what will replace lost manufacturing jobs and drive future economic growth.

“During the period of rapid economic growth after World War Two and even after the bursting of the (1980s) asset bubble, manufacturing … was a source of economic strength,” said Hisao Inoue, a freelance journalist who advised NHK on its script.

“‘Monozukuri’ (‘the making of things’) was a source of pride for Japan,” he told Reuters. “But that has changed and Japan has lost self-confidence.”

BUSINESS BUZZ

The show has won more than respectable Saturday evening ratings of over 10 percent, and created a buzz among business executives and bankers, with some wondering if it cuts too close to the bone with its portrayal of a firm – however fictional – on the edge.

“The performance is a bit melodramatic, but in a sense, it reflects reality,” said one Japanese banker.

The program’s chief producer Ren Takahashi said the story turned out more realistic than imagined when NHK began work on it two years ago. “The economy was bad then, but we didn’t think the electronics industry would be in such trouble,” he told Reuters, adding “Takumi” was a composite of companies symbolizing Japan rather than being based on one firm.

“There’s no easy solution to the problems of ‘Made in Japan’ … but we want to end it in a way that gives hope.”

The day before last week’s second episode, government data showed employment in Japan’s manufacturing sector dropped below 10 million for the first time in half a century.

“Japanese have great anxiety about the huge shift in power in East Asia to China on both the security and economic level,” said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University’s Japan campus. “The (TV) drama is a window into Japan’s collective anxiety about its apparent economic decline.”

Behind the melodrama, the story raises a deeper question: just what is Japan’s famed “monozukuri” ethos and can it survive global competition and world-wide supply chains?

“Monozukuri” is a complex concept that implies craftsmanship and superb quality but with an undertone of rote learning of skills through repetition – a talent key during the era of mass manufacturing but one critics say is not conducive to the innovation Japan needs now.

“It’s been drilled into people for years and years that this is what got Japan back after World War Two,” said Philip Brasor, a media critic who often writes about Japanese society through the prism of TV.

“Inevitably, it all changed. But they still think they can recapture that.”

Ex-LA cop, murder suspect sent CNN anchor parcel

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Law enforcement officials are inspecting a package CNN’s Anderson Cooper received from a former Los Angeles police officer who allegedly killed three in a shooting spree.

CNN spokeswoman Shimrit Sheetrit said Thursday that a parcel containing a note, a DVD and a bullet hole-riddled memento were sent by Christopher Dorner and addressed to Cooper’s office.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith says LAPD robbery-homicide detectives will inspect the package for clues.

The package arrived Feb. 1, days before the first two killings Dorner is accused of.

It contained a note on it that read, in part, “I never lied.”

Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements.

A coin typically given out as a souvenir by the police chief was also in the package, and riddled with bullet holes.

Court to probe singer Chris Brown’s community service records

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Prosecutors on Tuesday asked a court to find R&B singer Chris Brown in violation of his probation because they say community service records stemming from his 2009 assault on girlfriend Rihanna contain “significant discrepancies.”

Brown is scheduled to appear at a hearing on Wednesday in Los Angeles, at which time a judge could decide to revoke the “Don’t Wake Me Up” singer’s probation.

But Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, told Reuters the allegations are “scurrilous, libelous and defamatory.”

“The prosecution has lost their collective minds,” Geragos said. “I’m going to seek sanctions against the (district attorney’s) office for bringing a frivolous motion.”

Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to beating and punching R&B singer Rihanna and was sentenced to five years probation, 180 days of community service and domestic violence counseling.

The community service involved tasks like cutting grass, picking up trash and removing graffiti. He was allowed to complete it in his home state of Virginia.

“After a thorough review of all documents and evidence submitted to the court it appears there are significant discrepancies indicating at best sloppy documentation and, at worst fraudulent reporting,” Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray said in a court filing on Tuesday.

Murray cited three occasions when she said Brown was not at the recorded location of his community service and instead performing or traveling, once on a private jet bound for Cancun, Mexico.

Brown, in another instance, never stripped or waxed the floors at a Virginia community center as a report said he did, according to the 19-page court document.

Murray also accused Virginia authorities of poor and incorrect management of the singer’s service and records, and said his community service case should be transferred to Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg in November praised Brown for “actually working diligently to complete all the things the court has required of you.”

R&B singer Rihanna and Brown have recently rekindled their romance and are dating again, Rihanna told Rolling Stone magazine last week.

Brown was in a brawl last month with fellow singer Frank Ocean outside a West Hollywood recording studio. A police report indicates he punched Ocean in the face but Ocean said over the weekend he did not want Brown prosecuted.

Oscar night to have something for everyone, producers say

BEVERLY HILLS (Reuters) – With a high five from 9-year-old actress Quvenzhane Wallis, and a pledge that Oscar night will have something for everyone, the Academy Awards kicked into high gear on Monday at a luncheon for more than 160 nominees.

Jennifer Lawrence, Steven Spielberg, Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts, Joaquin Phoenix, Kathryn Bigleow, Anne Hathaway and Denzel Washington were among the Oscar-nominated actors, directors and producers who mingled over cocktails and lunch at a Beverly Hills hotel before gathering for the traditional group photo of the Academy Award class of 2012.

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” newcomer Wallis, the youngest actress ever to be nominated in the lead actress category, slapped hands with Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Hawk Koch as her name was called to join her peers for the annual photo ahead of the February 24 ceremony.

“Argo” producer-director Ben Affleck, riding high after his Iran hostage thriller took its third major award at the weekend, shrugged off being overlooked in the Best Director Oscar shortlist.

“I feel honored to be here. It’s a big party,” Affleck told reporters, adding, “I’ve had many, many nights watching (the Oscars) from home.”

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron – who will be producing the three-hour Academy Award telecast for the first time – said performances by Barbra Streisand, Adele and Norah Jones, along with special tributes to Hollywood musicals and 50 years of James Bond movies, should give the ceremony wide appeal.

The popularity of many of the nine Best Picture nominees should also help bring in big audiences at home and abroad, they said.

“It has been a great year for movies. The movies are very competitive and they have done great box office. So we feel there is more interest this year than perhaps previous years, ” Zadan said.

“Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Argo,” and “Django Unchained” have made more than $ 150 million each so far at the North American box office alone, while “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty” have grossed more than $ 70 million each.

Last year’s Best Film winner, black and white silent movie “The Artist,” took just $ 44.7 million at the box office in the United States and Canada, even after the boost from its five Oscars.

Zadan and Meron reminded the nominees that the Oscar telecast was seen by an estimated one billion people in more than 200 countries, and urged them to keep their acceptance speeches short and sweet.

“Please speak from the heart and not from a piece of paper,” Zadan told the nominees. “Be remembered for eloquence and passion.”

The Oscars is being hosted for the first time by provocative “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane. But Meron and Zadan said they had no worries about MacFarlane and his reputation for risqué comedy.

“Seth has been at every production meeting. We have been collaborating on everything, so we are not going to be surprised by anything,” Zadan told reporters.
